Expired: Universal Free Transportation Challenge

Universal Free Transportation Challenge

The future lives in the city. As more and more people desire to live in cities rather than in remote areas, concentration of businesses, retails and housing in urban areas will keep growing in the coming years.

Over 3.7 billion people (half of the world’s population) already live in cities, and this number is expected to grow to over 5 billion by 2030. The issue is that with population density increasing, it becomes more and more challenging to get around. Existing road and rail systems are already being stressed beyond their capacity, resulting in extreme traffic congestion, more time spent commuting, stress, increased pollution, more accidents and wasted time and huge amount of money spent in rent and parking. This is leading to increases in use of alternative transportation methods such as ridesharing, yet the challenge is still growing.

In the future, autonomous vehicles including trucks, drones, buses, and boats will keep the urban regions running 24/7. As sensor technology and artificial intelligence advances, the capabilities of these autonomous vehicles will advance at a rapid pace. Low cost, commercially available drones capable of sensing and responding to their environments will do tasks once done by humans, such as checking electrical power lines and clearing snow from the roads.

Smart cities of the future will manage their energy, materials flows, logistics, and traffic. Data-driven services such as intelligent parking solutions and smart lighting will be commonplace.

This is the future. But something is missing in the ideal picture, an effective and sustainable transportation solution for everyone, available for free.

Can you project yourself in 2050 and imagine a utopic world where efficient, free and universal transport supports communities in which all people have access to the benefits of modern society?
