Your smartphone is equipped with a front and rear camera. Imagine the amazing things we could do if they were 3D cameras! Very soon this will be reality.
A 3D camera enables you to assign a depth information to every pixel of your 2D picture. To experience the 3D character, you rotate the photography of the scene and you can look at it from different perspectives. The camera will know about absolute dimensions, so you can directly measure distances (for example) between objects or determine the size of the objects.
A limitation comes from the effect of occlusion, meaning that you can assign only depth values to parts of the objects seen by the camera, but not the object hidden behind another. To have a full 360° 3D view of a specific object, you can pan the camera around that object to obtain a 3D scan.
The cameras work in any lighting condition (except in the dark), indoor and outdoor, and on all surfaces. You can even zoom in for details. A still 3D image can be stored, as well as a 3D-stream file including point cloud and texture information which can be used to create 3D CAD models.
