Active Transport Bike Riding Innovation Challenge

Bike riding is a great option to get from A to B. Not only is it a good alternative to a car but there are also health and cost benefits and it reduces traffic and congestion!

Despite the benefits, there are still several barriers that prevent people from choosing bike riding for non-leisure journeys over other transport modes.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is challenging innovators to come up with a data or technology focused solution to help people overcome these barriers in order to make bike riding easy and fun, and in turn promote the use of bike riding as a viable mode of non-leisure transport.

A virtual information session will be held on Wednesday 12 May 2021, providing interested parties an opportunity to learn more about the challenge, what’s on offer, and ask questions. Thought Starters

Thought starters are to help inspire your solution and are divided into five categories: participation, safety & confidence, planning & preparation, data, and perception.

Participation	How could you make bike riding for A to B journeys more appealing? How could you increase bike riding participation through rewards, trip logging or gamification? How could you make it easier, fun or safer for children to ride to school? How could you encourage youths to use bike riding for journeys? How could you harness the additional opportunity created by e-bikes to get more people to use bike riding for journeys?
Safety & Confidence	How could you increase people’s bike riding confidence? What could you do to improve the safety of bike riders or improve their safety awareness? How could you help people to build skills to make them better and more confident bike riders?
Planning & Preparation	How could you make it easier to plan and start new cycling routes, including new options such as pop-up cycleways? What could you do to make multi-mode trips that include bike riding easier? How could you help new bike riders ensure they have the right equipment for bike riding journeys? How could you raise awareness of bike lockers and end of trip facilities?
Data	How could you help to improve the data on Bike Riding corridors, shared paths or the wider Bike Riding network? How could you use crowdsourcing to improve the data across the network?
Perception	How could you improve the perception and acceptance of bike riders amongst motorists?

How the Challenge Works

The information session will be held on Wednesday 12 May 2021 from 11am to 12:30pm AEST. The information session is an opportunity for developers and interested parties to ask questions and get further information about the challenge. Register now on Eventbrite.

Applications open on Wednesday 12 May 2021 at 12:30pm AEST and close on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 11:59pm AEST.

Submissions will be assessed and ranked by a judging panel, with finalists then invited to Pitch Day.

Pitch Day will be held on Wednesday 2 June 2021, during which finalists will pitch their solutions to a judging panel. Challenge finalists will then be selected.

Chosen teams will then begin the incubation phase with support from the Open Data and Innovation team as well as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Visit our Innovation Challenges page for more information on the innovation challenge process and to view case studies from previous challenges.

Awards:- The primary focus of this challenge is on solutions focussed around data and technology – not change management or similar programs. Seed funding from $5,000 to $50,000 is available for successful applicants, if required.
