The wire manufacturing industry produces various grades and types of wire products based on customer requirements like galvanized iron wires, springs, barbed wires, chain links, tire bead wires, shutter wires, etc. These products are sold in the form of spools, palettes, or coils. The dimensions of the packaged products can vary from 700 to 1800 mm in diameter and 200 to 900 mm in height, with the weight varying from 50 to 4000 kg.
The packaging requirements are determined based on the requirement of specific products, the probability of physical damage or damage from moisture, the strength of the material, and even customer requirements in few cases. The commonly used packaging materials include stretch film, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets, polybags, jute covers, etc. (Figure 1). Strong outer cages or spools are also used in few products to protect them from damages during transit.
The packed products are transported via road through open-body trucks (Figure 2) with a maximum transit duration of 7 days. Multi-layer tarpaulin covers are used for fleet packaging (Figure 3), depending on the type of product. For few products, as many as 5 layers of tarpaulin covers are provided, which focuses on 360o protection to finished goods, thereby ensuring reduction in material damage and reduction of wet complaints (Figure 4) in the rainy season.
Despite adopting these techniques in product and fleet packaging, customers complain that the product received is wet. Thus, we need to identify cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions for improving both product and fleet packaging. The proposed solution should also enable Full Truck Load (FTL) for products like Chain Link, Barbed Wire, Motor Tyre bead wires, while also adhering to National Heavy Vehicle Regulator norms and regulations.
