Tableau Foundation and Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030) have joined together to launch a Data Fellowship for Data Journalists. Applications are open to data journalists from India and Kenya who identify as women or gender minorities.
The Fellowship cohort will consist of up to 15 data journalists who demonstrate an interest in learning Tableau skills and a passion for data-driven journalism about gender quality issues linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In addition to extensive training, this opportunity includes a complimentary two-year license for Tableau software, ongoing mentoring and support, access to EM2030’s SDG Gender Index data and a $1,500 cash grant to support your work.
Fellows, in turn, are expected to apply their data skills and the EM2030 SDG Gender Index data to develop pieces of data-driven journalism (such as articles, infographics, apps, etc.) about key gender equality issues relevant to their country context.
The program has five key objectives:
- To collaborate with women and gender minority data journalists in India and Kenya to strengthen their capacity to analyse and use data in their journalism and to foster a network of evidence-based and data-driven journalists who are passionate about gender equality issues
- To increase the reach and impact of journalism about key gender equality issues, through enhanced analytical and data visualization skills and capacities
- To enhance connections between data journalists and advocates at global, regional and national level to have greater collective influence on gender equality issues
- To bring analytics to underrepresented issues and historically underserved communities
- To increase take up and dissemination of EM2030 data, analysis and tools (especially the SDG Gender Index and related Bending the Curve data)
- Please complete the application form at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5C8Q89T
- The application is very brief and will ask multiple choice questions or require very short answers about your motivation for applying, your data experience, your early thinking about the gender equality issues you might want to explore and the journalism products you might want to create through this Fellowship, and your reflections after briefly exploring EM2030 data for your country
- You will also be asked to upload or provide a link to a previous example of your data-driven journalism work
