In the United States, members of minoritized communities are more likely to develop serious health problems and experience the effects of a health disparity. These communities include people who identify as Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, underserved rural populations, people with disabilities, and sexual and gender minorities. Members of these communities are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality and much of the research on health disparities focuses on the problems these communities face. This problem focused approach overlooks the health-related strengths and assets of these communities, which further reinforces inequities. Moreover, community members themselves are infrequently invited to contribute to public health solutions. The voices of youth, a focus of research at NICHD, are even less frequently sought. The goal of the STRIVE for Change: Drawing on Our Strengths Art Challenge is to engage youth and showcase partnerships, traditions, practices, or other cultural aspects that promote positive health outcomes.

Building off the work of the NICHD’s STrategies to enRich Inclusion and achieVe Equity initiative, the STRIVE for Change: Drawing on Our Strengths Art Challenge is soliciting single, still graphic art submissions that focus on one or more community that experience health disparities. The artwork should highlight ways that people in the community manage adversity and promote resilience to promote positive health outcomes. Artwork should address a specific type of disadvantage that results in poorer health outcomes and focus on practices by or characteristics of the people in the community, such as events, ways of sharing resources and information, and cultural traditions, that address the disadvantage as well as highlight community strengths. This challenge provides participants with the opportunity to express their voices and perspectives.
