Throughout history, the elderly have played a pivotal role in society, serving as leaders, advisors, peacemakers, and custodians of cultural heritage. From ancient Rome to the Middle East and across Asia, elders were revered as figures of wisdom and authority, deeply intertwined with the community’s spiritual and moral fabric. However, as society shifts towards individualism and productivity, the elderly are often sidelined, leading to a growing need for initiatives that reconnect them with the community.
In response, the Oltre Noi Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Capalbio, is spearheading the ‘Citadel of Wisdom’ project. This initiative seeks to establish a day center for seniors in Tuscany’s Maremma region, a place known for its rich tradition of oral history and cultural preservation. The project envisions a space where the elderly can share their experiences and knowledge, fostering intergenerational connections. In its next phase, the project will explore residential solutions for independent seniors, ensuring they maintain their dignity and societal integration.
Set against the backdrop of Capalbio’s medieval charm and its 14th-century architecture, designers are challenged to create a harmonious environment that bridges past and present, fostering community and learning. YAC, the foundation, and the municipality express their gratitude to all designers participating in this meaningful endeavor.
