Innovative Design Contest for Maksimir Stadium and Svetice Sports Hub
Following a significant partnership between the City of Zagreb and the Croatian Government, an architectural competition was inaugurated on March 20th, 2026. This ambitious €224 million project aims to rejuvenate outdated facilities by establishing a premium sports precinct. Architects are called to present groundbreaking designs for a 35,000-seat stadium and a ‘City of Sport’ that respects the historical essence of the site while catering to modern athletic demands.
The Svetice-Maksimir area, nestled in eastern Zagreb, has been a vibrant center for sports since the late 1800s, with the iconic Maksimir Stadium at its heart. Known for its architectural significance, any new development must seamlessly blend with the verdant environment and the ecological legacy of the neighboring protected Maksimir Park.
This is a single-stage, open urban-architectural ideas and project competition. The ideas competition focuses on the Svetice Sports Centre and Borongaj Transit Hub (zones A+D) to inspire spatial concepts without committing to service contracts. Meanwhile, the project competition zeroes in on the Maksimir Football Stadium Complex (zone C) specifically to commission design services.
Detailed competition documents and further information are available in English on the official competition website. The aim is to identify the most outstanding architectural and urban design for the Maksimir Stadium Complex, Svetice Sports Centre, and Borongaj Transit Hub, which meets the demands and evaluation standards set by the Contracting Authority.
