t seems like a new subscription box launches every week. Whether it’s for a new type of shaving kit or laundry detergent—yes, that really exists—we as consumers can’t get our fill of the convenience and clever marketing. Research has also found that much joy can be created in the ‘unboxing’ experience.
The big challenge here is that subscription boxes risk being wasteful. Our products may still come in plastic and other non-recyclable or non-reusable materials. Single-use items still dominate product design and even packaging. In the biz, we call this Linear design.
However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Linear design can become Circular Design. A completely different way of approaching how products are made and their lifecycle.
Learn more about Circular Design.
We now live in a world where brands and consumers want to be more sustainable, now it’s up to designers like you to develop those solutions.
This brings us to the Box to the Future Design Competition.
This is your challenge: design the experiential future of the subscription box in the beauty & wellness space. How might an innovative brand, design products and packaging in a forward thinking and sustainable way?
To showcase your design, you’ll create up to 4 images, one factory spec, and a written description to explain your reasoning and process.
Step 1
The first step is to brainstorm an imaginary beauty & wellness brand. What is one product they make? Who does the brand appeal to? What need does the brand or product fulfil? What do they offer in their subscription box? If you could start from scratch, how would you design the future of the subscription box in the beauty and wellness space?
Need some ideas for a beauty & wellness brand? Consider these popular items…
Need some more inspiration? Look at existing brands and what opportunities they are using, planning to use, or not using.
Step 2
Next, think about and analyze what type of design would serve that brand and its customers.
How is the product used, shared, and for how long? How might you implement Circular design thinking throughout the entire brand experience? From the moment a subscription box arrives at a customer’s front door to when the customer visits the brand’s website.
Perhaps the experience is barely about a box at all. How might digital and community based solutions play into what the customer receives? What graphic and branding solutions help to create a positive experience?
Step 3
Once you’ve decided, create an amazing vision for the future of a subscription box that showcases your talent and the innovative & sustainable opportunity in the brand you’ve created.
