In recent years, vision researchers have utilized the OHDSI network to conduct impactful studies, such as characterizing the incidence of kidney failure associated with intravitreal anti-VEGF medications. Despite the success of these studies, many institutions lack the funding needed to participate in the OHDSI network, limiting the opportunities for collaboration and research in the vision community.
Objective: This Challenge aims to expand the OHDSI network for vision research by incentivizing researchers to submit innovative ideas for leveraging the network. Participants will be rewarded for their contributions, encouraging their organizations to adopt the OHDSI Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM). Expanding the network will enable the generation of valuable insights and drive advancements in patient care and outcomes in clinical ophthalmology and optometry. While winning entities are not required to, they are encouraged to use awards from this Challenge to integrate into the network, further fostering collaboration and cohesion within the OHDSI community.
Target Audiences/Solver Communities: This competition is open to the public, aiming to stimulate innovation and uphold the principles of open science. It seeks to attract individuals who may not have direct involvement in the field, including researchers, healthcare professionals, data scientists, informaticians, and other interested parties in vision science research. The Challenge mechanism was chosen to incentivize the development of solutions, reward the delivery of a product or outcome, and foster innovation and collaboration among a diverse group of participants.
Participants must register and compete in this Challenge as an Entity, meaning a group of individuals competing together on behalf of a legally established organization, institution, or corporation. Each participating Entity must designate a Point of Contact responsible for registering and submitting on behalf of the Entity and for all communications with the Challenge sponsors. If the Entity wins a cash prize, the prize will be paid directly to the Entity, not to the Point of Contact. To be eligible for a cash prize, the Entity must be incorporated in and maintain a primary place of business in the United States. As stated in the Participation Rules, Participants intending to use federal grant, cooperative agreement, or other transaction (OT) award funds (where permissible) must register for and participate in the Challenge as an Entity on behalf of the awardee institution or organization. If a dispute regarding the identity of the Point of Contact who submitted the entry cannot be resolved to NIH’s satisfaction, the affected submission will be deemed ineligible.
