We are a large company that makes a variety of paper products for food-related uses, including: plates, cups, food containers, & food packaging. Making sure these products are waterproof and grease proof has always been important, but future legislation is changing the way we’ll have to think about achieving this product requirement.
In the past, traditional polymers/plastics have been used to achieve the necessary water & grease-proofing, such as:
Polyethylene (PE)
Polypropylene (PP)
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Polyactic acid (PLA)
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)
Polybutylene succinate (PBS)
We are interested in new solutions that will help us add a water/grease-proof coating to our food-focused paper products that does not rely on any of these polymers/biopolymers. Below are some guardrails to keep in mind when coming up with your solutions:
Guardrails
Some sort of paper-based coating would be ideal, but we are open to other technologies & ideas as well
These products are disposable (1-3 uses) so the solution can’t be overly expensive since the products will not be used more than a few times
The proposed solution for coating the products will ideally be recyclable or compostable
Deliverables
1) Propose a new type of coating for our food-focused paper products that will provide a moisture (water & grease) barrier without the use of polymers and biopolymers listed above.
2) Is your solution currently being used for other applications or in other industries? If so, please explain.
