UNARETI (an A2A Company) is seeking new designs to develop compact underground electrical substation for urban areas.
As the second largest Distribution System Operator in Italy and being in charge of development and maintenance of the electricity grid in a key metropolitan area as Milan.
Existing electrical substations are usually placed in sufficiently large indoor spaces inside buildings or below the ground with access through manholes or trapdoors. New connections require retrofitting or revamping of existing substations that cannot always be accomplished in the same locations due to urban constraints in deploying new cables or to limited power capacity available at switchgears. Finding locations for a new secondary substation is difficult and is expected to become far more demanding in time. With this proposal, we are looking for innovative solutions to develop a compact underground substation with specific size restrictions, no indoor space, and a single point of access above the surface.
This is a Theoretical Challenge for underground electrical substation design that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the submission by the Seeker.
To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer their exclusive intellectual property (IP) rights to the Seeker. However, the Seeker is willing to consider a licensing agreement for a partial award if exclusive IP cannot be transferred by the Solver.
