Professional field hockey teams play on artificial turf surfaces with the addition of water as a lubricant, which improves players’ performance and protects them from injuries. However, given the size of the field, using this amount of water for each game is environmentally unsustainable.
This Challenge is looking for the design of an environmentally sustainable artificial turf that would retain all the benefits of the water-lubricated turf (in terms of both performance and players’ safety). The Seeker envisions a few possible ways to achieve this goal. For example, an additive can be found that would completely replace water as a lubricant. Alternatively, artificial turf can be designed that doesn’t require lubrication.
This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon the theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.
To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer to the Seeker their exclusive Intellectual Property (IP) rights to the solution.
