For this year’s #AutodeskMakeItReal student design challenge, New England football star James Develin needs your help designing a new gym he’s planning to build. Because this is an architecture, engineering, and construction project, this year’s theme is Make It Big.
If you’re a student between the ages of 13-19, we want to see your big ideas for gym designs that help James Develin tell his story. James is reimagining and designing a flexible gym space that promotes health and wellness for athletes, like him, who are recovering from serious injuries. Your designs need to be submitted as an Instructables guide, presenting and explaining a clear visual depiction of your concept. Document the stages of your design process and pretend that you’re pitching an idea to stakeholders.
Your Instructable needs to include both images and text. Designs should be created using an Autodesk product, such as Tinkercad, Fusion 360, FormIt, AutoCAD, and/or Revit.
To get a sense of the kind of gym James Develin wants to build we strongly encourage you to enroll in our free webinar series where James will share his vision and early sketches. The first webinar takes place on Dec 3, 2020 at 7:00 p.m., Eastern. Recordings of each webinar will be made available on this YouTube playlist when they become available.
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
• Technical Skills – How well does the student product demonstrate 3D digital literacy?
• Innovation – How imaginatively does the student address the constraints of designing a gym in the COVID era? How interesting, cool, and/or surprising is the design? How well does it show creativity, cleverness, and simplicity in consideration of form and function?
• Design Thinking – How effectively does the student product address a real and specific problem that is relevant to James’s vision? How insightfully does it demonstrate an understanding of the needs and goals of the potential end users? How evident is it that the designer has used an iterative process?
• Presentation – How compellingly does the student product tell a story that is relevant to James’s vision? How well does it highlight visual elements, principles of design, and an insight into the architectural process (renderings, exploded views, sectioned views, walkthroughs)?
